It’s one of the calls that no one ever wants to receive: finding out that their loved one has been arrested. Whether it is a friend or family, it is a harrowing thing to find out. No matter the circumstances, we know that it can be shocking, frightening, and overwhelming hearing the news. It is important to remember that you are not helpless and the most important thing at all times is making sure that your loved one is okay.
It is scary, but it happens to people every day. There is a way out of every bad situation, it just takes patience and perseverance. Here is what we recommend doing when you hear that a loved one has been arrested:
Stay Calm. Panicking helps no one. The most important thing you can do for your loved one is to stay calm and listen to them. If you get a chance to speak with them, do not lead with hurt or anger. There is time for that later. Make sure to remind them that all conversations will be recorded and anything they say can be held against them in court. If you do not get a chance to speak with them personally, know that they are in the middle of a very difficult situation and they would much rather be speaking to you if they could.
Understand the Basics. You should know where your loved one is being held and what the future looks like for them. You may hear from your loved one themselves or law enforcement about where they are. If you do not, contact the District Attorney’s office or use an online lookup to find out. From there, figure out if your loved one has to appear in court and if there is a bail available for them.
Make Sure They Are Safe. If your loved one needs medicine that they do not have with them, consider consulting their physician for help. Your loved one or their doctor should be able to say that they require medicine and have it provided for them. Make sure your loved one is physically safe and being respected.
